After spending a day with the Mg 4 XPOWER here is my review. How much power does just under £37000 get you? In the case of the MG 4 XPOWER you get over 420bhp, 428bhp to be exact and a 0-62 time of 3.8secs.

Having owned MGs in the past I actually one back in 2003.  An MG ZS in bright yellow, I actually went into this with low expectations as that was the only brand new car I have owned that had to go back under warranty for a catalogue of failures. I’m pleased to say that I was pleasantly surprised. SIAC the now Chinese owners of MG have done a superb job of turning the brand around. The XPOWER along with the soon to be released Cyberster marks the return of them selling performance and roadster model. All with MGs excellent 7 Yr warranty.

Overall I was very impressed with the fit and finish of the car. The clear just over 10 inch screen give you access to sat nav and radio control, it’s also good to see a drivers display behind the steering wheel giving all relevant driver information. This car also lots of the latest safety features meaning it received the coveted 5 Euro NCAP stars. The seats are comfortable, and the interior has nice sections of Alcantara exclusive to XPOWER specification. The ride is comfortable if a little firm to enable the car to handle the power, unfortunately at this price point adaptive dampers are not an option.

Let’s now talk about efficiency, back in the days of ICE you could never expect a car with such power to have good efficiency. In the days of EV you can have both. During my time with the MG I achieved 4.6mpkwh which would give me a range of 283miles well above WLTP  out of its 61.7kwh usable battery.  It also charges pretty quick with a peak charging speed of 145kw.

Overall MG have made an excellent return to the performance car market. If was to have one complaint about the car its exterior appearance isn’t quite extreme enough. Apart from slightly larger wheels and orange calliper covers there is very little to distinguish it from the standard Trophy addition. I wish it had been a bit more like the EX4 concept that was shown at Goodwood. This is more like an understated sleeper with an awesome turn of acceleration.  Thanks to Nathaniel Cars Bridgend for the loan.
