Efficiency: Exceeding Expectations

At first glance, the official WLTP range of 354 miles from an 84 kWh usable battery doesn’t sound groundbreaking. However, in real-world driving, the G6 consistently delivered over 400 miles per charge — a remarkable 50-mile uplift over the WLTP figure.

And no, this wasn’t a hypermiling challenge. It’s been a bit of a heatwave during my time with the car, so the air conditioning was working hard. It’s worth noting that this level of efficiency came while riding on 20” Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, which usually hinder range.

Charging is equally impressive, with the long-range version supporting ultra-fast 280 kW DC charging thanks to its 800V architecture. That puts it right up there with the fastest-charging EVs on the market.

Technology: A Feature-Rich Cabin

It’s clear that XPeng has the Tesla Model Y in its sights. The G6 boasts a 19-speaker, 960W premium audio system, a large central touchscreen, and both wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — something Tesla still lacks.

You also get two 50W wireless charging pads with active cooling — a must-have feature for modern smartphones, especially during longer drives.

Driving Experience: Smooth, But Not Perfect

The G6 delivers a confident and enjoyable drive, with plenty of power on tap. That said, some of the UK’s rougher road surfaces are more noticeable, likely due to the large, low-profile 20” wheels. Still, it remains a comfortable and composed cruiser on all but the worst roads.

Autonomous features are extensive, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic overtaking. These systems work very well on motorways but tend to be overly cautious on country roads, slowing down more than necessary for moderate bends.

Standout Feature: Self-Parking

Perhaps the most impressive trick up the G6’s sleeve is its fully autonomous parking system — which can even operate when you’re not in the car. It’s genuinely impressive and more refined than many competitors’ offerings.

Final Thoughts

If you’re in the market for a well-priced, tech-laden, and efficient alternative to the Tesla Model Y, the XPeng G6 deserves your attention.

The Long Range model I tested costs £44,900, while the Standard Range version starts at under £40,000, cleverly dodging the UK’s luxury car tax. Considering everything it offers — from real-world efficiency to cutting-edge features — the G6 represents exceptional value for money.
